I'm looking seriously at an '04 w/ 31k miles. The dealer wants $47k. I think the car should be more like $43k.

Thoughts ?

Here's what I know. Skyhook Suspension, GPS Navigation, Xenon Lights, Full Brier Wood Interior Trim, Leather Headliner, Dual Power Heated Front Seats, Chrome Front Grill, Custom Dashboard, Piping & Stitching, Powered HiFi Sound System, Nuvol Gray, Sella Leather, new clutch and 1 owner, clean car fax.

Thanks

Prices ? '02s vs '04's ??

See: http://www.maseratilife.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3266

Price would seem a little high, based on those miles.

Eric
Thanks, I was looking at that post which is what is giving me second thoughts on the '04 I'm considering. The dealer came down $400 and will not budge off that - he's at $46.5 and the car has 31k miles with relatively new brakes, tires and clutch and is a 1 owner. Just thinking that if I pulled the trigger at that price, is she likely to drop $10k within a year or so ?

If so, maybe the '02's in the $30's are a better deal at this time ?

Ramp,
Very pretty car , love the color and equipment combo. The price is what you would like to pay,and if you really want the car. If you are only concerned with resale ,it's probably best to look at a different make of car. I would still would try for a Coupe GT if you can find one. But that's just me.
Ron:)
Thanks for the feedback - now that I've driven the F1, I sort of like having the option to put it in auto from time to time - no worries if I had 1 to many at dinner since my wife can then drive home.

I am concerned somewhat with resale only b/c I do tend to buy every 1-2 years and I still have my '99 911. With Porsche, you generally know the values and where they are and will be going - your never going to loose much and a good Porsche - only when you buy one new or close to new. Maserati is a whole different ballgame and I just want to make sure that I'm not overpaying. Paying market is fine but I see a significant swing in prices. I see some lower and some much higher, very few have miles in the 30's plus so I don't know where it will be when it hits 40k.

Oh well, decision time.

I had a BoxsterS and really liked it. Where I live is surrounded by fun roads so I had lots of opportunity to drive it hard. After a while though I realized it had 2 serious problems: coming out of corners the Porsche didn't have the horsepower to keep up with the rice rockets it had just out-cornered and on a trip of any distance the suspension wore me out. I spent quite a bit more money and got my Maserati Spyder GT and haven't quit smiling. I push the Sport Button and it takes the curves as well as the BoxsterS (maybe a bit better) and when I floor it I think I've touched off a bomb rather than an engine. The rice rockets don't stand a chance. Then on a trip or the interstate I take it out of Sport mode and I all of sudden I'm driving a superior Grand Touring car. My point is that if you have to pay a bit more then it's worth it just for the grin on your face. :) :) :)
Thanks alot, this helps. I love my 911 and think the handling is fantastic - it's at home on twisties but, like you, after a long drive or just tooling around town, my bones start to ache - and I'm still 'relatively young at 40'. I want something that I can have tons of fun with when the opportunities present themselves and then kick back on a weekend getaway or tooling around town.

If he came down another 2 grand, I would pull the trigger.

If the car is clean that seems like a good price ($46.5k) as is. Given the new clutch, tires and brakes, the mileage really isn't an issue.

(but of course budget for an F1 pump replacement)
Well, I'm going to drive 150 miles in the morning to go take a look !!

Love the car, but . . . and my learning experience

:) Thanks to all for the assistance to date (couple of posts) related to narrowing down what to buy, options and prices.:)

I test drove my 4th Coupe today - 1 GT and 3 CC's. The GT and 1 CC where '02's for $35,000 both with around 30k miles. Both showed wear - more wear than normal for a 30k mile car - let alone a Maserati that you would have expected to have been taken better car of . . . my '99 911 is in significantly better shape than these '02's from dealers - yes, they are on-online for the high $30's - if your looking at them and want some detail, pm me.

Both '04's were in vastly better condition, both priced at approx. $47,000, 1 with 20k miles and one with 30.7k miles. The lower mileage car is great and would sell for less than the higher mileage car that I drove today -- will get to this). However, although the blue exterior has grown on me, the interior is blue/gray and although in good condition, just doesn't excite me. So, I pass.

Now, the one that I started this post on and my test drive today.

1. I drove this car (a CC) much more than the others and really started to understand how to drive this car and understand the drivetrain. I think its an acquired taste, one that I think I can fully learn to love - and fully understand why others won't ever like - it's a matter of expectation, i.e, this is not an automatic, it's a manual with a computer controlled, hydraulic operated clutch and gear selector - plain and simple - a very different animal from both an automatic and a manual. I love manual's and fully appreciate automatics and NOW look forward to learning how to properly drive an F1.

2. The car checked out VERY nicely. A few minor light surface scratches, a few small rock chips up front, very very light wear on the front drivers seat, clean rims, etc.

3. Car handled well, drove well, sounded great.

4. The issues: (1) In the first 5 minutes of our drive (I believe in an uphill climb at 25-35 MPH), the traction/stability control system "locked up" . We didn't know what happened but the car started to brake itself as if the ABS and Traction was kicking in. The MSP light on the dash was blinking. After the second time, we turned her off, restarted and that was that. ANY IDEAS ?
(2) All said, (I'm ready ?) (was ready ?) to buy this car, then after we returned to the dealer and parked it outside, in the sun, I noticed that the passenger side door color was slightly off !! I asked the dealer what he thought and he agreed. I believe it was a surprise to him as well. But after looking, neither of us could really find any evidence that the door had been painted, but it was now evident that it had been - once you noticed the difference, your eye's could spot it easily. We then checked the paint levels and found that it was in deed higher than other areas. He doesn't think there is any bondy and we are "speculating" that it was a repaint from something like a keying issue.

Anyway, we talked and they came down another $500 to $46 (from $46,900) - not much - and agreed to have it repainted to be perfect.

I obviously needed to think about this, so here I am. But for these 2 issues (primarily the paint), I would have bought it today. The MSP doesn't concern me too much since the warranty goes through April 30, 2008.

Input appreciated.

I would do a search on the dealer's name in either Ferrarichat or Rennlist.
From what I have read, this is not the first time they were "surprised" by a repaint.
Fred - thanks, I did the searches and found some positive and some not, but nothing major. Do you know the dealer I'm speaking with ?

Slycy - your right on about controlling emotions. The car seems to be right but I think the repaint may bother me, especially since I'm not getting any special deal - another 5-7k off, may chnage that view, but that's not going to happen as they have barely moved, knowing the issues we now have and knowing they have a ready willing and able buyer - who just drove 300 plus miles roundtrip.

FWIW, I'd rather have a car with a couple of paint blemishes than any repaint. The electrical issue is also a troubling one. I say patience is a virtue.
Agreed - I'm going to pass. Keep me posted if anyone comes across something nice !

Ramp,
If you go to the Maserati North America web site, you can search for a used coupe. You can narrow the search by year ,color ,ect. I would give it a try.
Ron:)
Thanks Ron, I did and found that the prices on 2004's from the Maserati dealers are running around $10-$15 thousand more than anything on-line !!!

Ramp,
If you add up all of the time you have spent looking at duds. The price the dealers are asking for are not that bad. Keep in mind they are an asking price, it is a starting point. Plus every thing on the car will work and they have the Maserati used car warranty. And that means peace of mind!
Ron, I agree but look at this for example: It's an '03 w/ 29.5k for $58,000 !! Even if they came down 10k, it's overpriced for an '03 - don't you think ? Or am I wrong to think that even $48k would be too much for this car ?

Are people really spending this for a '03 ? Thanks for the help though . . .:)

I just purchased an 04 Coupe with 6k, F1, skyhook, 200W audio, NO NAV or CD changer for $45k. I looked at a bunch with 20-30k in the low 40's. Definetly have the dealer check it out. Mine had 1% wear on the clutch and perfect leak down/compression test. May as well do the compression/leak down, because Maserati will require it for the extended warranty it offers on 04 cars when their warranty expires next year.
Your the reason I'm second guessing !:D That was a good deal. Did you ever post pics ??? Did you buy privately or from a dealer ? and where are you ?

Ramp - No. That price is just too high. I paid ten less for a pristine '03 with 6200 miles on it. The only difference in equipment was that mine's a GT not a CC. I would have happily paid more for the same car with a dealer certification, but not that much more. I've seen better deals on eBay! Be patient with this - there are great deals to be had on great cars even if you have to go out of state. Bill
I'll take my time - by the way I test drove that Black one at Cars of Yesterday in Ft. Lauderdale - the guy's a joke and the car is in poor shape. I also drove a very nice '04 at Chariot's of Palm Beach - Have been thinking about it - the ONLY thing I did not like about it is the interior was a solid blue and just didn't turn me on.
