4200 coupes were designated M128
4200 Spyders and GranSports are M138
Early QPs are M139
These I believe are merely product designations by the manufacturer and mean nothing else.

I have a UK spec. 2002 4200 Coupe and in the vehicle factory documents it is designated M138, not M128, and all the electronic modules are also labelled M138.

Let confusion reign!! haha

Trust me on this one. In America the 4200 Coupe was M128, The 4200 Spyder and 4200 Gransports are M138.

How about "read my lips, it's an M128"

If this helps I have a certicicate of conformity from Maserati for my 02 Coupe and it reads - Engine code M138, type and commercial description "M 138 Coupe"

This document was delivered with the car when new and issued on the 2nd October 2002 by Maserati.

Don't know about cars that were not exported to the U.S. That may be the case. I am referring to U.S. sales. I have one from my since sold 2002 Coupe that says M128.
