Hello All. I own a 2008, 4.2 GT. Last year I noticed a knocking noise which was diagnosed as a broken big end bearing. The shop at which I bought the car put in another (used) engine with 6K kilometers on it and it is working fine now. After that they encountered issues with the ZF6 Gearbox, not getting to run it smooth.

Two weeks ago they also solved that issue through a transmission specialist.

Current issue however is that after driving for some time the car is braking by itself, not touching the pedal. Not only rear (electronic) brakes but also front brakes.

Together with the above there is also Gearbox errors P2700 and P2703 which are rather general error codes.

Does anyone have some advice for me or my shop on how to solve this or what to look at ?

Car is not in my possession at this moment, so I did not diagnose it myself. Shop told me that brakes are getting hot at the wheel which in my opinion would mean a braking action

Originally you stated the car is braking by itself. Now it is the brakes are getting hot at the wheel. Might be time to look for another shop which can explain matters a little more clearly. Off the top of my head, brakes do get hot and that heat can dissipate to the wheels. If there is an issue with them, like the calipers sticking the rotors will most probably be discolored from the higher-than-normal heat. Brakes are not that complicated to diagnose, in most cases. Thus, the reason for the "look for another shop".

I understand your advice. However, this is a warranty issue. Which means that If I would bring the car to another shop it is going to cost me money. I did advise the current shop to look for a specialist or consult a Maserati dealer but until now no solutions. Car was checked last Friday by a brake specialist but I did not receive an update yet.

With regards to the technical side : the guy from the shop that is giving me the info is the owner and well....he is not really a technical guy. He is more of a salesperson. So I always have to ask more questions to get to the bottom.
Current story is : car driving fine until at a certain unpredictable moment the car starts braking (not constantly) and also comes up with the gearbox error codes.
Last update was that the brakes would be bled and they would investigate the ABS pump

Wasn't there a post on a wheel sensor fault that would cause that?

That definitely sounds concerning. Sudden braking like that can often be traced to a faulty ABS sensor or an issue with the NFR brake module. There’s a helpful thread here where someone experienced a similar problem related to the brake NFR node:
Worth checking for any ABS or stability control faults with a proper scan. I’ve seen issues like this pop up in vehicles used regularly in fleet setups or through a corporate letting company, where shared use can sometimes mask early warning signs. Let us know what you find!

Hey Ronald, so sorry to hear of your issues.. seems to me that although the shop has made big efforts to resolve, at the end of the day i would really push to get a complete refund on the car, .. once you start having whole engine replacements, big gearbox problems and the rest.. so much now rests on the cars own diagnostics and it's sometimes notorious fickle electronics and match coding you are in real danger of ever being able to relax enough to actually enjoy the car..
whatever, very best of luck with your situation.. Steve..
