.. so this is just one of the posts in case anyone else has similar issues.

Short version of the story.

Live in FL and have an 04 Coupe. @ 50k right now. (like to drive)
Ran 5-40 oil ( per dealer/book/everywhere ).
Noticed a few months back the same lifter 'tick' that has been noted on here for some time. After a fresh oil change the 'tick' didnt go away ( normal process ). Brought to dealer where they determined that it is a faulty lifter. due to delay in parts- 3 weeks later stated issue had been resolved - 1 bad lifter & 2 'out of spec'. I ask for the keys prior to handing over the check --- and now no lifter tick but when pop on the gas 2k-4k quite a loud rattle. Gave the keys back and held out on that check. Dealer then states that must be a valve spring masked by the bad lifter. So car goes back in and valve covers removed - all visible parts checked. all seem to be ok. cam timing etc all in spec. So heads are pulled and there are 3 weak valve springs - no bent valves.

2 months later the pass side head sits at a machine shop checking the cam play etc....

dealers closing comment as we wait for the long anticipated head to return is " well if this doesn't fix it then we need to look at other options " my reply, "yep, give me a rental and flat bed this to a dealer that can fix it" dealers final reply " no i meant sell car, may be time to call it quits and buy a new one.".................................... fin.

i'll have an update later in the week.
going to get the wife a SLK for a work car tomorrow--- maybe i can just borrow that while dealer boy connects the dots.

Dumb question, but did you, or can you still have the oil analyzed?

This will tell you what metals are present and give you some peace of mind as to the overall health of the engine.

I run BG MOA in all my (older) cars to account for the lack of zinc. The weak springs are a strange thing. perhaps they are the reason the lifters had problems.

Hope you have a warranty. Stuff like this on these "newer" cars it what scares guys like me off! :)
