Hey ya'll it's been a little while. Today, it finally happened. My car is a USA Market GranSport.

Image

I checked several posts on here and I think I have a handle on the issue but I'm not 100% sure.

My GranSport door locks are having issues. The key fob does not work in terms of locking and unlocking. I don't think it's a problem with the FOB itself, as it works intermittently but only cycles the locks as follows:

1. locked/unlocked/locked
2. unlocked/locked/unlocked.

Unlocking the trunk works every time via button. Using the fob sometimes triggers the usual things like flashing signals and the sound of the fuel pump priming.

What have I done so far?

1. I've flipped the battery kill switch, waited, and switched it back on. No result.
2. I've played with using the key manually in both the driver and the passenger side doors. Varying results shared below.
3. I've manually used the switches and levers from inside of the car. Varying results shared below.

What I have not done and would like to do:

1. I'd like to open up my key fob and verify that the board is in good condition and potentially swap the battery. Does anyone have any instructions on how to do this? I only have one key and I don't want to break it.

Conclusion so far:

This is likely not a key FOB issue and likely a faulty lock solenoid issue. Using the FOB achieves nothing.

Using the key manually in the driver's side door is the only temporary solution as it locks/unlocks both doors. Using the key in the passenger door presents the issue. I manually unlock it, which works, but it immediately switches back to locked. While doing this, I observe the driver's side DOES NOT unlock.

While manually using the lock/unlock switch on the driver's side door, both doors lock and unlock together.

While manually using the lock/unlock switch on the passenger's side door, only the passenger door locks, but then immediately unlocks. While doing this, I observe no change on the driver's side.

My assumption here is that one of the two door locking mechanisms in faulty and needs replacing (probably a dead solenoid). Question here is which one ... and also where the hell can I obtain one? No availability on Eurospares, Ricambi, Scuderia, etc.

Here are the part numbers according to my research:

Right Hand Door Lock - 67294800
Left Hand Door Lock - 67294900

Mine did that for awhile and started working again(after getting rained for the 1st time since I've owned it. It was a huge storm.). I'm pretty sure it's the Driver's side causing it. Personally I would leave the fob alone!
So it just started working again by itself? I've driven in the rain quite a few times with the car and had no issues prior. Has the issue ever presented again?

Yes it did. It was for sure my solenoid as it started making funny noises when it 1st started working again. Fingers crossed it hasn't acted up again. This wasn't an ordinary rain. As luck would have it, it was at Jason's when a massive storm hit that dumped 3 or 4 inches of rain in an hour! I suppose it could be coincidence.

What I would try is locking it with the key, then trying to unlock it with the fob and visa versa several times a day. I think it was like a month later when mine started working again. I was just using the key to lock mine. Another thing that it caused was it threw my alarm out of sync with the locks.

I noticed the alarm light on the dash out of sync but it can be put back in sync if you lock the door that is working with both and then you'll see the alarm light blinking when it's locked.

Weird Italian gremlins I suppose. I did try what you suggested regarding using the fob once I manually have them in the right position but no result.

I'm curious to know how I can identify which mechanism is the faulty one ... The driver or passenger side. It's possible that even though the driver side works and signals the passenger side to sync ... It's actually that one that may be broken because using the key on the passenger side does not cause the driver's side to sync .. yet the passenger side immediately syncs back to original position.

Yes. Start with the driver's side.

Also...check for a "flutter." Because if it starts hunting to sync, it will zap your battery. Lived experience. I chased the issue in the Coupe, but just pulled the relay in the Spyder since door locks on a fabric roof are kinda pointless.

I never even lock my doors...nothing is ever left in my car and if a thief wants in, their getting in anyway...fabric roof or hardtop!

I couldn't reproduce it but when playing with the locks yesterday I was able to intervene mid cycle on the passenger side and it was freaking out. It was making a strange sound and it kept cycling trying to open and close and I could visually see the mechanism trying to move.

Would this suggest the driver side is the faulty one or the passenger side?

Driver's side lock unit is failing

So it's not the control unit but most likely the driver's side lock? I'm assuming the solution here is swapping this out for another ... now about finding another one to replace it with .... most likely won't be able to find a new one .... so will have to buy one that is parted out ...

Is this a hard job to do myself? I'm assuming I can just take off the door card and swap the unit out? Nothing special?

It's not a good time. Not impossible, by any stretch...but the mechanicals are fidgety.

Yes, from what you write the driver's side. I would keep massaging it if I were you. One thing I've realized is to try to use everything in the car regularly. Kindda like the use it or lose it mentality with your health.

I had the bright idea to keep a little wear off the window regulator over a year ago. I just left my window rolled down an inch. After a few weeks of that it started freaking out when I would close it all the way! Open the door and the window would drop all the way down. Stopped doing that and haven't had a problem since(fingers crossed!). It's also not a bad idea to cycle the HVAC through all the positions regularly to ward off the stickyness!

Good point. I believe I was able to source a left and right lock for an affordable price. Used of course. Are you aware of any tutorials on swapping these locks out?

I think someone on here or the other forum investigated rebuilding the the mechanism, but I'm not sure if he was successful. I have replaced one myself, and it was not easy, but fairly straight forward. You might try a google search for replacement.

I found some parts. Just trying to find the details on the process.

Mostly likely, yes.

It's not that bad, couple of hours when I did it. Personally I'd hold out for new.
