Dear all,

I have a 2007 QP V with ZF transmission. With original CATS / MID RESONATOR / END MUFFLERS. This QP has run 111.000 kilometers.

This car already sounded more loud when i got it, than other 4.2 ZF original QP's. I also mounted GTS mufflers on this system to test, and these also sound a little bit more loud than expected (I know how these sound on other 4.2 and 4.7 ZF's).

So I am wondering if there are components in the exhaust system (cats / mid resonator / pipes / end mufflers) that degrade over time in any of these components? Maybe the CATS or fiberglass in the mufflers or...

Are there reasons why the exhaust system could sound more loud over time in the QP 5?

  • Do the cats become louder?
  • Is there wool / fiberglass in the originall quad pipes that degradres over time?
  • Is there wool / fiberglass in the GTS mufflers that degrades over time?

With kind regards,

Steven

I don't use vacuum at all now. I mounted the GTS mufflers with vacuum valves. But i closed the valves by pushing them upwards and fixating them with some metal wire. So that they remain in this position.

So I have the valves closed and it still sounds quit Rough/ loud.
are you the first owner?
No I'm the second owner, and I don't know anything about the history.

I suggest putting the exhaust back to OEM and then listen for a change in the sound when put in Sport mode. There should be a change in the sound, if not maybe there isn’t any vacuum to the actuator.
Thanks for your input. Will try that this week.

Just for my understanding: I thought that most Maserati Quattroporte V's (except for Original GTS version) There is not vacuum operated by the sports button. That the standard mufflers only open up by a certain amount of RPM / pressure which opens up the internal valves in the mufflers.

Isn't that the case or is there another form of vacuum operated by the engine that I am not aware of?

I figured it out. I flexed open my GTS muffers. And indeed there is fiberwool / glass in one of the compartments. The compartiment which is only / mainly used when the valves are closed. This was degraded in my mufflers. So I stuffed it with new filling and have then welded close again. I Will add pictures later.
