Maybe of interest to others is a modification allowing the operation of the roof without the handbrake engaged and whilst moving. Using this module:

Audi 80 BMW E36 SL SLK Cabrio 50Km/h Verdeck -modul | eBay

Wired using the module's yellow & blue wires to Pin 6 of the roof ECU. Which is the handbrake signal input.

The module earths the input but also stops dash warning lights for both handbrake & roof. Which when experimenting previously have stopped the gearbox operating normally.

The module also has the ability to limit the speed of roof operation when at 30mph. I haven't used this and have tested upto 40mph without issue. Other than acting as an air scoop when disengaging at the front the roof operates normally. I don't envisage using this feature at such speeds and most likely only when changing weather causes concern.

Obviously, this information is provided with the disclaimer that should you modify your roof you do so at your own risk. To confirm, this is for a 2004 4200 Spyder. I would advise checking your own roof ECU inputs to be certain of compatibility.

This is great stuff! Having been caught out a time or two and needing to find a safe place to get completely off the road; park; set handbrake; and operate the roof I have wanted an option to potentially streamline the process...thanks for pioneering!

Exactly this Den, occasional use when needs must. This started having been trapped behind a French farmer whose hay bales were shedding everywhere. There was no choice but to stop and no where to do so. Incurring the inevitable wrath of those following. I've also had to stop for rain multiple times.

@Black Mazerati these roofs are far more robust than they get credit for with the majority of problems arising from lack of regular use and little or no maintenance. The hydraulic system is also more than capable of providing a bit of extra grunt. At low speed this will be minimal.

My main concern was not having both hands on the wheel so have also installed a 'one touch' module on the roof button. Together with a safety switch to avoid accidental operation.
