shrieking noise on turning the key

This has happened twice in the last week. Cold start. Key to accessory-on, no problem. Keep turning to ignition, and I hear a high pitched noise - the kind that you get when you try to start a car with the starter motor when the car is already started.... But of course in my instance it is occurring while the car hasn't yet started. I noticed that when it happens, the rev shoots up (yep, rev shoots up with just the turning of the key) to around 3-4k rpm... But the characteristic rumble you get when the engine actually starts is not actually present. The car doesn't start like this and I switch the key to off.

Try again the second time and then the car starts normally....

The two happens in happened scared the hell out of me.... the noise is a high pitched shriek...

Anyone came across this before?

Sounds like a bad starter plain and simple.

Some starters have a solenoid that first engages the starter motor. Don't know for certain what Mas uses. I can't find Mas starter listed separately in online parts sites.

Thanks for the inputs, guys. So:

1. Starter - is that easy to access in the QP?

2. Starter solenoid - is that part of the starter? Can it be replaced separate to the starter?

3. Flexplate..... not sure what that is.... lol

The car has been starting fine the last couple of weeks due to my finger-crossing, no doubt.

Flexplate is the flywheel...They can get can get worn because a car engine tends to stop in the same one or two places when you shut it off..Starter solenoid is part of the starter, but I don't think that will fix it...Jason
