Replacing valve cover gaskets

Recently this has been a topic on several threads because it needs to be done fairly often on the F-136 engine variants in Maserati cars. A lot of different prices have been quoted for this job. I just wanted to report how much it cost me at my independent shop in San Jose. This is a "high-end" shop charging nominally $150/hour, but they book jobs in a kind of loose fashion without listing hours. They just kind of pick a number for labor on jobs sometimes, and I always wonder if I'm getting a good or bad deal on that.

Anyway, for the valve cover gaskets they combined the labor with my 50K mile service, which is mostly replacing the plugs. The total labor was $1320, plus the gaskets were $125 for both.

2.5 hours per side? That is a good deal...I wouldn't personally do it for that...$1300.00 is a pretty good price considering you are in California..There are estimates and then there is Chicago, SF, LA, Boston, and NY...add 25-35%...I'm in Atlanta and it's reasonable..Jason

I'm glad I'm handy, no offense to the pros but that's ridiculous. Time is money and mechanics need to live too, I'm not at all saying it's not fair either. It costs what it costs, I'm just saying I'm glad I'll never have to pay it.

Maybe I have low standards but I'd say if you can tackle this job you are not just "handy" you are basically a mechanic. "Handy" is when you change your own oil.

Then maybe I'm just selling myself short because of modesty lol. I've done timing belts, water pumps, head gaskets, clutches and even rear subframe swaps. I'm not a mechanic but I could be if I chose to. In my opinion if it doesn't require specialized tools or precision measuring it's a handyman job.

I think the alternator is a bigger pain than the valve cover gaskets. Feeling back there to be sure the rubber "discs" are in place while dropping in the valve cover isn't pleasant if you're by yourself but it certainly isn't an all day job. I pulled mine off, cleaned them, replaced my variator solenoids and reinstalled them with new gaskets on a Saturday.

Once you've mastered removing the firewall-forward components (windshield wiper assembly, drain pan, etc.), the rest is just twisting hex bolts.

Also, I published a thread a few years ago about the difference in material between the Maserati gaskets and the Ferrari gaskets. The Ferrari gaskets are a slightly different rubber. Not that it make a difference, but I only install the Ferrari parts now with zero issues.
