Multi Media screen flicker

I ran a search and although there are a bunch of threads and posts about various problems with the multi media system, this particular one did not appear among them ; while driving , the screen which was on the MAP display at the time, suddenly started to flicker, even go blank for a fraction of a second of a time and then get back to normal, and then flicker again. This went on for about half a minute . Since it was on maps, I thought it’s just a temporary satellite reception glitch so I turned it to the radio screen to test that theory but that screen was also flickering ! The sound was not interrupted at all , though . ( I don’t have any subscriptions to satellite radio, so that would eliminate the sattelite thing as a culprit I suppose ), so wondering what the heck that was all about. But then it went right back to normal and it was perfectly fine for the entire 45 + minutes remaining drive, no flickering whatsoever . Has anyone experienced that symptom ? Was wondering if this is a sign of the screen display starting to go bad , or just one of those inexplicable Maserati electrical gremlins. Still, no way near as bad as Lucas electonics ( those who have owned older British cars will know all too well what I’m talking about ) but curious what could cause the screen to flicker .

I have never seen that or had anyone complain about it...Doesn't Blaupunk or Bose make those units? Not Maserati? I don't think these cars have anymore electrical issues than any other luxury car from Europe. Lucas stuff wasn't as bad as advertised, but it was bad...Just worked on 1977 XJ12...The electrical part is a shit show..No one knew crap about the electrical system of a car back then...Magnet Mareilli was almost as bad...J

Guessing it would probably be Bose , just because thatís the stereo system in GTs, right ?
Well, hoping itís just an isolated incident ( whatever the cause ) , and it wonít reoccur.
As for Lucas, the classic poster many mechanics had in their shops is ..

Flickering of the screen on anything will be nothing to do with satellite reception. The NIT is a Magnetti Marelli unit (I have the full technical manual for them)
If you had no audio issues I'd suspect a loose / breaking connection to the video screen. Would be odd since the cables are clipped in pretty positively. Or a failing hard drive which is a know issue, but the symptoms are different.

Do you ever get a white screen on start, or the audio system needing to reboot when you fire the car up?

Cheers

When starting the car, I think it does take the screen a second or two before the image appears, so I guess you could say it is white for a brief moment . I’ll have to test this in the morning to see exactly when it comes on ( it may come on right away with the key at the all systems ready position , and then go off for a second while I start the car, but I’ll verify that ..)
The radio takes even longer to kick in sometimes, but maybe because the first thing the unit does as soon as the key is on is to pair the Bluetooth to the phone ...? At other times, soon after starting the car allow when I change the preset stations the sound of the new station does not come on for maybe five seconds or more, yet at other times it does come on immmediately.

Got into the car this morning, turned the key to the on position, without firing it up, and waited for the screen display to appear. But the screen stayed completely black for longer than I have ever seen that happen...I’d say just about 10 seconds. So as I was getting that “ oh, crap, there it goes, an expensive repair coming up.. “ the screen came on. Normal display, no flickering at all. But it never had the white screen with the Maserati logo, it went directly from black to the maps display I had on at the time
BTW, the radio sound started playing within just a couple of seconds of the key being on, although there was no display .
Took the key out , reinserted it but this time I started the car right away. The screen display came on after just a couple of seconds. Still no white screen with the logo in the interim , just the maps display again. No flickering .
I tried the radio preset buttons to see what happens ; as usual the screen switched to the radio display, the stations id appeared as they normal do, some stations still took a little bit of time for the sound to to kick in ( not all stations, maybe two out of the six presets ) but the display aspect was fine .
Then I went through the first step one more time ; turned the key on ( without firing up the car ) and on this last try the screen turned on after the same brief two seconds or so, rather than staying black for what seemed like an eternity when I first did this .
Disturbingly though, not sure what happened to the Maserati logo white screen which always came on first every time I stared the car .

Also, I should mention that I did not have my phone with me, deliberately to take the Bluetooth connect out of the equation .

So the new problem added to the previously mentioned problems is the lack of the Maserati logo screen now, just a black screen and delay for the visuals to make their appearance . This can’t be good ..

And it’s now a few hours later... got in the car, turned on the key, the white Maserati logo screen immediately came on, the Bluetooth paired the phone right away , the screen display is just fine .. Nuts ! Leaving it alone for the next three days, and driving the ancient ( 1994 ) Porsche over the weekend..that one does not have any multi media screens and all the technology crap that goes along with it ..just a Blaupunkt stereo system which is more than sufficient ..

The boot sequence seems, shall we say, variable. Sometimes I get the splash screen, sometimes I don't. Sometimes I get a spontaneous reboot (especially when cold) sometimes not.

Fundamentally these hard drives are getting on a bit. Rather a lot in fact. There is a guy in the UK (that I can heartily recommend) that can supply a brand new, imaged. SSD drive as a slot in replacement. It's a bit fiddly, but totally not impossible for either a computer repair shop or a car audio repair specialist.

Very reasonable few hundred bucks if memory services

Cheers

Thanks C, will keep that in mind if this thing worsens . Just weird how many electronic things can be affected by weather ; cold, heat, rain, all seem to have some affect or another on some device or another . In hot weather my MBZís dashboard display fades to the point of where the LED letters and numbers are barely visible. And no, itís not the bright sun that just makes it look like that . And weíve had colder than usual days here lately with a lot more rain as well, so I wonder if that had something to do with the GTs multi media starting to act up as it did. Well, Iíll give it some time and see what happens ..

Maybe the NIT usually goes into something like a 'sleep' mode so it can start up faster, but when battery voltage drops below a certain level it shuts down, so the next time it takes longer to boot up.

Just my guess.

Indeed. LCD's don't work great at high temperatures. These hard drives are mechanical, so are significantly impacted by temperature variation

Just my guess.
It does, indeed, have several modes. Damned if I can work out what makes it go from one to the others though

I once read a quote on a US site
Why do the English drink warm beer?
Because Lucas make all the refrigerators

And Vauxhall claims it was the first vehicle manufacturer to invent the rear window defroster ....thatís so your hands donít freeze in the winter when you have to push your car home or to the nearest repair shop...

But back to our multi media systems .. jukebox issues, iPod tunes and tracks sort issues, inconsistent modes functions which seem to have a mind of their own, reboot variances , etc.. youíd think for the price ( what is it , something around $ 4,000 ?! ) theyíd be able to produce a much higher quality system.

So after that first incident , the system was fine for a couple of days, and then one day while I was driving , all of a sudden it started rebooting every minute ..actually it was more like every 30 seconds , went off completely, then when it came on everything worked fine, radio, maps , etc but only for half minute and then off again, and then on again. I stopped , turned off the car , waited about five minutes, turned it on again but this nonsense continued for the remainder of about 20 minutes when I git home . The next day worked perfectly fine as if nothing had ever happened. As it did the day after that ( yesterday ) . Maybe that hard drive is starting to go bad .

“ Maserless “ , formally known as Catman - I’m thinking it may not be a bad idea for me to buy that SSD drive from your contact and then just keep it on the shelf until when and if my system decides to die . For a couple of hundred it’s not that bad of an expense to have as a spare back up part ..even if I never get to use it. Can you let me know how I can get a hold of him ? If for some reason you don’t want to post his info, then maybe send me a PM, or, my email : [email protected] is also ok. Thanks ,
Dan
