CEL's and sport cats

Earlier this year, I got a CEL and took it to my dealer who said that my Larini sport cats might have something to do with it, or maybe a bad O2 sensor.

Well, I got it again recently. Can I use something like the OBDSTAR X-200 to clear the fault? Will it also show a bad O2 sensor?

You can clear CELs with any cheap OBD reader, and it'll also give you a fault code. I've used this one with my GT to clear emissions-related engine codes before.

I had never gotten a CEL for O2 on my Sport Cats until I did that warranty software fix recently. I am not sure they go hand in hand but odd coincidence. I have a cheap little ELM bluetooth OBD scanner that connects to my cell and it will clear the code but it pops up again after a while. I bought those o2 extender pieces but haven't installed them yet.

slightly off topic but did the sports cats give you a appreciable power gain? Can you drive with flaps closed and not cause a commotion?

Put a pair of these in the downstream oxygen sensors for $20, and you won't get that code again.

Can you install these without putting the car on a lift?

Easily, with a pair of ramps. Only other thing you'll need is an o2 sensor socket like this.

I did get the stainless version. The ones in the link were really quite rough looking, huh!? I am sure they were just used to convey the idea. I got mine from amazon as well but the looked like much better quality for marginally more money.

Bit puzzled here. Give me the Automotive 101 on why moving the O2 sensor away from the exhaust stream will fix an error. I am by no means doubting that it works, I just don't understand why. I would think the sensor would like to be up close and personal with the exhaust to do it's work.

The front O2 sensors output swings between rich and lean...The downstream do not and should remain steady with a good catalytic...Your pulling the 02 sensor out of the path of the exhaust so it doesn't see the swing..It works a good bit of the time, but not on all cars...Jason

I plugged an OBD II scanner and got a code "P0420 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold" fault. What does this mean exactly? A bad O2 sensor?

No, it is exactly what it says...Install the spacers on the downstream O2 sensors...This is why a lot of techs. don't like aftermarket cats.. They seem to throw P0420 or P0430 codes after a bit...Jason

Not one of you answered my question about the race cats. This is why this forum sucks.
