MC Stradale - "Gearbox Unavailable" Error

Hello everyone,
I've searched for this through the forum and cannot readily see a similar issue in other posts.

For the last 4 months or so, I have been getting very odd and frustrating issues with my Stradale. When I start the car, it often doesn't release the park brake and so I switch off the engine and restart it. This releases the brake however i get the error message "Gearbox Unavailable" with no way of selecting any thing. On turning off the engine, it will not start for maybe 8 - 10 cycles and then everything is OK - no issues for the day. Sometimes all is OK until the gearbox starts to change down from 3rd - 2nd or 2nd to 1st and it is typically at a junction, which means I'm blocking the road. The car is always in Sport mode.

Often when driving the "Park Off" message appears and I lose the hill-holder function. The dealer said that it was because the battery didn't have enough charge, so I have been charging the battery when I haven't used for car for over a week. Two weeks ago I had the dealer put a new battery in.

Over the weekend, I was attending Auto Italia and on the morning of the event when I left the hotel, I reversed out of the car space and then the "Gearbox Unavailable" message appeared and after several cycles and warming the engine, it finally recovered, however 5 minutes later at a traffic light, it failed again and took another 5-10 minutes to recover.

I'm off the have a deeper discussion with the dealer because they had advised that the issue was low voltage, however with a brand new battery and several hours usage, I would have thought the battery would be OK.

Has anyone else experienced this issue?

sjw.

Sorry to hear this, definitely a discussion to have with the dealer, especially if you're in warranty. It sounds like the TCU is losing connection, could be a bad module, bad wiring connection. Either way though it's going to require a diagnosis from a computer that can read the Maserati protocols and some troubleshooting.

Hope that helps and good luck!

Thanks for the comments. The dealer has had the car for a week and the high level conclusion is that the gearbox is not being pressurised when cold. The next problem is that they do not know at what point the system is doing this. When you open the drivers door, it does not prime any of the systems, however it can start - after a while.

The dealer has tested the pressure at the clutch and it is OK, now they are checking the gearbox ancillaries for electrical failures etc. BTW, the only error being produced is the one on the dashboard - the OBD is showing that all is OK.

More to follow as we track down why this is happening when cold, yet is OK when the car has run for a while and everything is hot - which suggests that there is no pressure leak - it just is random when starting.

Check all battery cable and ground strap connections especially to the car chassis. Intermittent or weak ground connections can cause strange behaviors of the TCU and eventually fry it.

Yep, diagnosis and troubleshooting with proper tool is the way forward. It could be any of many things. Change dealer if they cannot handle it. Assuming battery is at fault and replacing it without proper troubleshoot is weak imho... should ask for a refund if I were you if not it could be trial end error from now on and you would be bled to frustration...

Definitely the dealer should perform the self-learn procedure on the gearbox system. I had the same issue at cold operating and weather temperatures and it was resolved after properly performing the self-learn procedure which should be done every 20.000 Km or every 2 years (depending which one comes earlier).

Interesting comments and opens up another question! I wasn't aware of the self-learn procedure being done every 20,000 kms. the problems started after the car had turned over that distance. So the question is - does this procedure need a dealer or can the owner do it?

Owner cannot do it unless he/her has the necessary tool (SD2/3 or equivalent). Dealer would have the tool.
