Vegas Trip- Play time with a BMW 650i

So I am on a run to Vegas out in the desert. I come up on a 650i who is moving pretty good as everyone else.
Mini vans are cruising along at 90,lol. Love the wide open west. So I slide by the Bimmer and keep my pace.
There it no traffic for as far as we can see at the point. I see him getting on the throttle now so I do the 6th to 4th down shift and open her up. I just walked away with no problem. About 5 minutes later when the road is open again I see him coming hard from about a 1/4 mile back. I pick up the pace in 6th and he goes by under full throttle. Once I see his tail pipes as he is pulling away I drop to 4th again and hit the hammer. He is now no longer pulling away and I am gaining on him. About door to door I shift into 5th and just I just start pulling away.

I have had this car for almost 5 years now and 30,000 miles and she never fails to amaze me on the road.

4.3 litter V-8 rated at 390 HP vs 4.4 litter V-8 Twin turbo V-8 445 HP Why the miss match?

Weight is actually pretty close. My car has air high flow air cleaner and Silenced Larini decat and full Larini exhaust. I thought I was in the 440 HP area from my seat of the pants dyno. Decat really allows the motor to spin free and easy. Like I shaved 5 lbs off the fly wheel.

Head to Head I would have expected the Bimmer to have the edge straight line. This was clearly not the case. Weak 650i vs a strong Coupe motor is my only quess or BMW is very optimistic with there HP ratings.

Phx to LV in 4 hours which is moving. I actually did it in 3.5 once in a MINI Cooper JCW. Last part of 19 hour drive straight from Seattle ot PHX. Followed a group of outlaw bikers from Kingman to Carefee. Running 100 plus the whole way at night! I passed all but the two leaders. We hit 140 in areas. I figured the loud bikes were keeping all the critters off the road
between us.

It was actually a pretty boring but scenic trip until a caught the Bimmer. We traded leading at speed all the way to LV for at least 120 miles. I was leading at one point running in the slow lane. He was trailing in the fast lane. I got painted with Lazer and hit the breaks pretty hard and we were moving. He went past and we got painted a second time. We slowed to 80 for 5 minutes but never saw him. He could have been running the other direction as the medium was a very wide between n and s bound traffic. That got my heart pumping the fastest.

Cool story. Which product are you using for laser defense and how much notification does it give you?
I've got an older V1 with the arrows and it has saved me mucho!!

Using the Escort Redline which is designed more for open country and long range.

I found this interesting forum with tremendous amounts of state specific information:

Radar Detector & Laser Jammer Forum

Mods, should this be posted elsewhere; perhaps made into a sticky?

I own both a 650i TT and a GTS

The BMW is a torque monster from idle up, not sure what happened to the BMW that you came up against, but I suspect, since I can't drive both at the same time, that my 650i would spank the Mas. or make it work for every inch of ground. With that said, the Mas absolutely feels more fun, easy to light up the tires and sounds wonderful.

I use the Redline detector too and added the smartphone and Bluetooth power cord app that really, really makes it a killer combo. I've put 16k miles with this set up (traveling from Dallas to KCMO and back since Sept) and it gives you tremendous peace of mind. The app automatically loads into the cloud all KA events and learns where the false alarms are. You then have a database of "Live Cop:" and other alerts well before the radar detector picks them up

I hear what your saying but that 2014 was given every opportunity to show me something and I was not impressed. Looked a like a pro athlete driving it. Car was white and blacked out windows but I got look with the sun coming into the drivers door from the west. Lets just say big money. My Italian girl would love to teach Bruno a few dance moves.

No telling what the driver was doing.

I'm wondering if this may have been a 640 or older 650, they look identical. (Or he was driving in Eco-Pro mode)....at any rate it sounded like you had fun and enjoyed your Italian pal. I actually named my BMW Bruno, while my GTS is called Nino....

With rear dynamic steering and lots of nanny stuff on the 650i, It's fun to jump back in the GTS, take the traction control off and light-em-up. But make no mistake, the 650i is a strong car. The NEWER ones, 2013 up, pump out almost 500ft/lbs of torque and have a published 0-60 time about a tenth of a second or better than the GTS. (around 4.4 or so)

However, the Mas is ALWAYS the show stopper and head turner and sounds soooo much better than a turbo'd car. Even the new Quatroporte with forced induction retains that F1 / beast music flowing out of the tailpipes.

Drive safely. The next time you meet you're Beemer pal, he'll probably have traded it in for something Italian...!
