Heater Core Reliability

Are the heater cores on these models the Achilles Heel as much as Craig Waterman suggests on his site? Craig suggests that EVERY Coupe, Spyder & GS will eventually have this issue. What have been the experiences of owners & pro's here regarding leaking heater cores & subsequent replacements on these models? I already agree about the extensive R&R process if defective. Early 2002s had the same issue.

Every car will need an engine rebuild too. Eventually. Just like everything else.
My twelve year old, 45,000 mile car has the original unit and it's not leaking.

The heater core is known to to be an issue with this vehicle -- we are aware of customers who have had heater core issues, but there are others (including one of our employee's 2005 Gransport) that hasn't. So, it's certainly possible you may eventually have this issue but like anything, just be aware of it in the event you start to see signs.

Enjoy the ride!

I sure do wish there could be a poll:

1) Which car do/did you have: Spyder, 6MT, CC, GS
2) Heater Core issue with my coupe (whether I still own it or not): YES or NO.

Then I could tally up a crude likelihood (being the data geek that I am).

I suppose that's a bridge too far.

Thanks for chiming in,

There is definitely an issue with the heater core. I have never had a car that would start leaking at 37k miles. No matter how old. The heater core is one of the poor quality components in these cars. There is a long list of those. Much longer than on a typical car. I don't mind most that much but this one I do. Totally unnecessary, massive undertaking to replace it. Oh well...nobody said it was easy....

How did you deal with it? Just bite the bullet? Is this about an 18 hour labor job?
Thanks for your post!

I had to 2006 cars. One was a Grasport and the other a 6spd manual. Owned for about 3 years each and no heater core issues. Its like anything else, it could leak 2 months after buying it or it could last till you sell it. I wouldnt let it stop me. Just find a nice car and buy it

We'd have to say, it's as Lorenz put it... it may happen or not. Our GranSport has not had the issue but we've had many customers that have had it happen. Seems to be a more common issue so you're best to plan for it happening and hope that it doesn't!

Good luck!

Understood. If I knew how many such vehicles were represented on the forum, that would establish a base. I have tried to word a poll query (work in progress) to take this issue into account.

maybe we add to that:
window regulators
window micro switches
convertible top
-electrical issues
-stretched elastic
-holes worn in the top sides
climate control unit
speakers
interior
-stickies
-cracked leather seats
- wearing top door cards by simply holding your arm on them.
-leather separating from airbags on the steering wheel and passenger side dash
-Floor mats falling apart
-door rubber seals tearing apart
suspension
-control arm bushings wearing prematurely
-ball joint dust covers disintegration.
This is all before the car hits 40k miles.
Fortunately most of it was taken care of under warranty. I wonder why FCA is doing so bad financially? ....;-)
By comparison my A4 avant is nearing 140K miles and it still looks new- the interior still looks and smells new. I had none of the issues above (other than engine rebuild under warranty due to excessive oil consumption haha)
My a6 avant before that hit 170k miles without even light bulb blown or engine rebuild (I did change transmission at 140k-because my mechanic screwed up the service) until somebody totalled it parked on the street .
