Hello, I've done some poking around and it seems that the recommended 10w50 Agip oil has been discontinued. What is a suitable Agip replacement? I don't want to run Mobil in my Qporte III, Alfa Milano 3.0L, or F360, as I am a firm believer that Agip is the only oil for the Italian cars. I use Mobil in my Porsche/BMW race cars, but I don't want to use Mobil in the Italian group. I may consider a Shell product (but I really don't care for their oil), or a FINA product. What are your thoughts? Most of the cars will either be driven as they were designed to be, or see regular track use. Thanks, Ricky |

I get questions about oils all the time. Everyone has an opinion on how thier oil works in their cars. I always ask, how do you know the oil is doing a good job? There's always dead silence. Unless you are willing to have the oil tested with a UAO (universal Oil Analysis) every time you chnage the oil or perform an engine tear down, there's no difintive way to know how your oil is performing. Here's something else to consdier, not all synthetics are the same. The real high end synthetics are ester based, that's alcohol based sythetics which are real true synthetic oils. Most every other kind of current synthetic oils are known as PAO, Poly Alpha Olefin. The PAO is a quality oil, it replicates mineral oil which the ester oils do not. Saying you only use Italian oil in your Italian cars is like saying I can only take my Italian car to an Italian mechanic, it doesn't hold true. If you want top quality oils check out Motul oils and also for vintage cars check out BradPenn oils. If you change your oil and filter on regular basis with a current API rated, well known brand of oil you'll be fine. If you are going racing check out the Motul 300V |

Now that we have you on the line, what about alternatives to the Quaker State Qhorespower oil sold by Formula Dynamics for 4.2/4.7 Automatic QPs? Is there a substitute? I can't find this oil anywhere locally. I am forced to ship it in from the USA via FD with insane shipping costs to Nova Scotia. |

I don't know why I didn't think of the Motul 300v sooner. I ordered quite a bit just now for the BMWs and I ordered 8L for the Alfa of the Motul 300v 15w50. If the Motul holds up in the Alfa, I will probably use it in the Maserati. Another couple choices I have on the way are: 10w60 Agip motorbike (for the alfa), Selenia 10w50 Racing (Alfa), Agip 15w50 (for the Masi [possibly] it's the Mineral replacement for the recommended 10w50 Agip Sint 2000). Once I get these cars out to the track on 11 May I will report back with my findings. |

It will be a little while before I have news on the 15w50 classic. The Qporte needs quite a bit. I'm going to get working on it tomorrow morning. I'll post up some pictures. For what I paid, I can't imagine a more fun car. Sounds great, has enough power to be usable, rides well, great interior (lots of quirks though with switch location and direction--that's why I bought it though). Overall, I am glad I didn't buy a gen 5 qporte. I certainly wish we got the qporte IV here though. Very cool car. Best qporte IMO is the fourth gen. Anyway.....off to strip out sound deadening from the Alfa! |
