Question Changing Brake Pads

Has anyone changed their own brake pads? I have a '08 QP and my husband wants to change the pads. I am in south Louisiana. There is one shop certified to work on exotics in this area. They are refusing to put on any pads other than the factory ones. We are using a set up from Formula Dynamics. Just wondering how difficult it is.

It is very easy. Once you have the wheel off, you carefully(so you don't chip the paint finish on the caliper with ill aimed tools) use a small punch to tap the retaining pins in towards the differential, and pull them out. There will be a small spring plate under the pins that put inward pressure on the pads that will pop out, but not too forcefully. Now, use either a brake piston spreader or, you can (VERY CAREFULLY) compress the pads away from the rotor with a pair of channel locks. If I was to do that, I take a length of rubber hose and slice it so I can fit it over the plier jaws and secure it with electrical tape. Once you get a small amount of space between the pad and the rotor, use a small(10") prybar and gently press the piston into the caliper completely being careful to not gouge the rotor. Slide the old pad out, and clean the pad sliding surfaces inside the caliper. Insert the new pad and move to the next one. Do this process in full for each pad, beforevmoving to the next one. Reinsert the spring plate and retaining pins and use a small punch to tap the pins back into place. You may have to press the plate into place with one hand to get the pins installed properly. Once that's done, reinstall the wheels, and before driving the car, DON'T FORGET TO DO THIS. PUMP THE BRAKE PEDAL SEVERAL TIMES TO PUSH THE PISTONS AND PADS BACK AGAINST THE ROTORS. The pedal will get firm when that is done. Skipping that step will cause the pedal to go to the floor the first time you need to use it to stop. If you forget, and you are lucky, you will just back further down the driveway further than you want, unlucky and you will take out your garage door, your neighbors car, your house, mailbox, etc.

That's ridiculous. The FD pads are a direct drop-in replacement for the factory pads. Even while under warranty my Maserati dealer had no issue installing mine. I might be able to understand a resistance to rotors, but pads...??? It's a simple and basic component.

Out of curiosity, why did they refuse?

@elambo: They said that they have had a number of previous clients blame them for poor installation when the pads proved too squeaky!! I say its my money, let me decide!

Installation, anti-squeal compound and bed-in procedures are all important when installing new pads. So long as you follow the standard install guidelines, our newest compound of quiet pads have proven themselves to be very quiet. In fact we now sell to several factory Maserati dealers that offer them as an option to their customers.

We've also contacted the shop in question and they've just ordered up a set of our pads. I think you'll find that they're ready to work with you now. From my understanding they had a bit of a bad experience a few years back trying several brands besides the factory pads.

This is good to know.
I am on the fence about buying a QP. I have a Benz and do all of my own work and haven't pulled the trigger on a QP as I am afraid i can't do the simple things like change brake pads or change the oil. This is good to know that its possible for a person that is reguarlly handy with car maintence.

Well, the topside extraction oil change that you can do on a Benz isn't going to be possible on a dry sump Ferrari engine - so forget that, I believe on another thread someone said there are two drain plugs you have to remove from below.
