Finally have a car to do the radio/nav replacement. I'll be installing the new Kenwood DNN990HD. This will be quite labor intensive, I'm hoping to have it wrapped up in a couple of weeks. I'll be updating with pictures as I go along, and maybe even throw in a few how-to's on disassembling the interior, etc. Stay tuned...
Will there be an option to just have you make this again wrapped in a feux wood grain. That would be much cheaper then shipping my car down to you. I'm sure i could have a local audio shop do the rest.
Complete project will be $5-6k depending on equipment used. This is not much more than the old touchscreen conversion with the Kenwood car portal. The dash bezel with switch modification is a majority of the labor cost
Steering wheel control are retained and functional with the Kenwood unit. Here are some pictures with better lighting. Here is a link to the radio that was installed Kenwood - DNN990HD on of the best units I've seen, it definitely has every option.
Thanks guys
I'll need to get a few more cars in to make up for the time I've put in this one, but I definitely plan on being able to send out dash bezels and give instruction for those too far out to justify shipping cost of the car. Any finish is possible, including carbon fiber.
Hi Monty. A quick question. When you were digging behind the stock nav screen unit, was there much room behind it so that the stock unit can be just "relocated" by being pushed in really far or have it just sit somewhere inside the dash where there is a big space? Or is there no choice and the whole thing needs to be rewired to run from the trunk? Thanks.
Definitely not enough room behind the dash. I was going to disassemble it and make it more compact like I do on the Gran Turismo, but the way the circuit board is designed wouldn't allow it.
I was just thinking along the lines of keeping the original unit somewhere, and install a Parrot Asteroid Smart, and use its video in option to get a camera feed of the original screen.
Of the options on the factory unit, I can't imagine there would be anything that would need to be frequently changed. Getting video out of the factory screen and putting it into the Kenwood is a fairly simple task. The problem is all the buttons, which didn't make sense to try and extend because of limited use of the factory features in the radio.
Really? Getting video out of the factory unit is a simple task? That is awesome news. Could you elaborate on how that can be done please? Is it a RGB/VGA/Component signal that gets sent to the Sharp screen? I can see from the spec sheet of the screen here http://www.distrib-informatique.com/lcd/Library/Sharp/LQ065T5AR01.pdf
that pin 15, 16, 17 and 19, 20, 21 are two sets of RGB signals that go to the screen. But I don't know if these RGB signals are the same RGB signals carried in VGA cables, or Component cables, or whatever else...
If I can simply take the RGB output from the factory screen, and plug it into, say, an Android tablet with video-in (Parrot Asteroid Smart is the only one I am aware of, and it's not exactly a "tablet", but it at least is possible), then we can retain the factory amplifier/radio/trip computer/setup screen, while having an Android tablet for music, video and nav. The Android would simply output to the CDC input or AV input of the factory nav unit. I am imagining such a tablet might be thin enough so that there would be no need to relocate the factory nav unit, but rather just pushing it in a bit, to create enough space to accommodate the depth of the Android tablet....
You will need a RGB to composite adapter if you are going that route. It needs to take RGB in and convert to Composite out. I have a couple of custom built pieces if needed. You wont be able to move the screen back and still use the buttons but you can remove the lcd screen and use that space.
My QP doesnt start after I unplugged the cd changer
I was having problems with cd changer. After a few minutes the cd would be noisy. So I thought to unplug it for a few minutes. I plugged it back and the car did not start. I need some help here
my 05 qp doesnt start after I unplugged the cd changer
I was having some noise when listening to cds. So I unplugged the cd changer for a few minutes. When I plugged it back in car didnt start. I need some help
did u just swap the factory unit out for a after market one ? how do you keep the trip and maintance info ? l'm located in asia and I would like to buy the wire kit if you have them.
thanks
Just taking a stab at this with the hopes Im not a dollar short and a day late. I am really interested in this whole set up. Monty, can I pay you for a wood grain bezel, custom program for can bus, and whatever is needed to complete the job. I have a installer that's willing to take on the job and this should give him everything needed to get the it done. Please email me if your still doing this setup at hammonhph@aol.com
Thanks,
