Resonator or X-pipe ? also Drive By Wire.

Hello.
I am definitely getting cat bypass pipes for my 2002 Coupe. Most likely the Larini.

I am wondering though, if I really need an X-pipe, or not. It looks like the stock "resonator" middle section of the exhaust already has an X-shape.

What is the purpose of the resonator then? Does it muffle the sound? Does it sacrifice power, and with an X-pipe I'd get more power?

I don't want to go crazy with mods and do more than I really need. But, I think that the Formula Dynamics F1 Drive By Wire Enhancement Module looks like a good thing if it can actually prolong the clutch life. Does anyone have experience with those? The last time I did the clutch on this car it was EXPENSIVE.

Thanks.

I can highly recommend FD drive by wire. I also recommend eliminating the squished pipes(secondary cats) and resonator. By doing this you will have a nice free flowing exhaust, alittle more power and a car that shifts quicker in my opinion

Thank you. I will definitely do the DBW enhancement. Are they easy to install?
Still not sure about the X-pipe, but I think the secondary cat elimination is mandatory.
I'm not going for the loudest most obnoxious sound. I'm keeping the stock mufflers.
My concern was whether the X-pipe also adds to the loudness as I believe it does.

It will add additional volume but not much.

You get more volume working from the back forwards....

Thank you. For now I think it's best to keep the stock mufflers.

Chris is correct in what he says. Loudness is better achevied from the back. So what were saying is working from the front like you are doing will not get obnosiuosly loud at all. You can remove all of that and the car will not get that much louder, even by removing the resonator. It will get alittle more volume but not that much. This is the same set up that i did to my 2 maseratis, However on the last coupe i did experiment with the mufflers. I ended up leaving stock mufflers and changing everything else....Have fun

Thank you. That confirms what I suspected. I will also leave the stock mufflers.
By the way, I have an extra set of stock mufflers from a 2004 with 9,800 miles.
PM me if interested.

Status update.

I just ordered the DBW enhancement module from Formula Dynamics. I hope the installation is straightforward.
I have to say the deciding factor is that it's supposed to save clutch life.

Hello,
Phil from Fabspeed here. We suggest doing the x-pipe. It saves on weight and improves performance and sound. The x-pipe really enhances the sounds that Coupes already have. It also helps adding some gain along the way.

Here is a direct link to the product page for the x-pipe.

Thank you, Phil.
I've already spoken to Nick G., and toured your factory. I live very close to Fort Washington.
What I decided to do for now is buy a used Larini cat bypass from someone on this forum, install it and see how it is. I'm doing things incrementally, like first I installed a BMC air filter I bought from Fabspeed.

If all goes well, I may order the cat bypass and X-pipe from Fabspeed, but I know it's a 6 week process to produce them. I wanted to get started on something right away and I was contemplating getting both from Formula Dynamics since they have Larini in stock.

But, I think overall your product is better, especially the cat bypass. To me the two X-pipes are essentially the same. But, Nick is working out a deal with me to manufacture both.

Again, I'm really not keen on making the car any louder. I just want more performance. I like the sound of the stock setup already. The resonator is also in an X-shape. I know it's extra weight, but not by much considering the weight of the car. With a passenger or two the difference is negligible in my opinion.

If I do go ahead with a Fabspeed replacement, I'll pass along the Larini cat bypass to someone else. Thankfully, exhaust mods are an easy installation that the discount brake/muffler/tires shop up the street can do.

Hey Ratirati,

Great choice of adding the DBW on your Maserati 4200.
It's truly one of our #1 products.

I saw you say you weren't really keen on adding volume but you wanted the power. Any cat bypass (Decat pipe) you put on the car is going to add a ton of volume. You'll pick up some good power but definitely lots of volume. If you wanted to decat the car and not add the volume I would suggest SILENCED Decats Pipes. These will get you the power of a Decat but not all the volume.

As seen here:
4200 Larini Systems Sport Cats / Race De-Cats

We list the Race Decats and Sportcats but also the Larini SILENCED Race Decat Pipes.

With regards to the X-Pipe, it will give a tiny amount of horsepower (approx 4-6hp) but will allow you to hear some of the more intricate sounds of the exhaust. We call them crackle and pops (slight backfire sounds on downshift) which really give the exhaust a more unique sound. We think those make the exhaust sound better actually but that's just personal preference. If you wanted to remove the resonator and not hear as much in the way of crackle and pops and have a little deeper tone then we'd suggest going with something like the Larini H-Pipe.

4200 Larini Systems - Sports Centre Section (H-Pipe)

Another way to add more horsepower but not even touch the exhaust would be our ECM Performance Chip. It gives you more horsepower than the exhaust pieces and better low end torque. Also it's designed specifically to go with the DBW you just purchased so when installing the DBW it's just a few more wires to install the ECM Chip. They use the same harness.

We have a package special for the DBW & ECM so if you decide on going with the ECM, I'll make sure you get that discount. Should you decide to go with Silenced Decats or any of the Larini product, just give me a ring and I'll take care of you.

We're here to get you exactly what you're looking for so if we can help just let us know.

Best Regards,

Cyril

Thank you, Cyril
That's all good information. I did order the DBW from you yesterday. Like I said, I'm going to do things incrementally and gauge the result. I've looked at all of your products for the Coupe. I'll share the results on this forum. I'm not doing anything that dozens of others here haven't done, of course.

Hi I deleted my secondary cats and removed the squashed pipes and added a quicksilver xpipe and rounded pipes that replaced the squashed pipes. Was a perfect fit, car sounds great performs better and runs cooler plus the quicksilver were not as expensive as others but quality is just as good imo.

Curious about the DBW+ECU package deal as I don't see it on the site...

Also, on the topic of the pipes, I was wondering if doing the de-cat would mess me up come emissions time in New York State?

Im sure they would give you a package deal. Call them and talk to them. Thats always the best. I always support their products as i have had a few of them and ive had good customer support. I had the DBW in 2 of my cars and i believe, althought not proven, that it will help with clutch life.
