Default Engine compartment cleaning

My 02 is spotless outside, it's unbelievable for a car 10 years old. Under the hood looks good, however I noticed a bit of engine grime. What is the best cleaning method to use under the hood?

The engine, in my opinion, is a work of art and should be displayed properly. This car is so clean, I intend to enter it in a local car show here in Georgia.

I can't believe that no one here cleans under the hood... Somebody's got to have a favorite product...

I too clean it under the hood, but I have no special tools except for a damp rag and armor all. I hope someone will post something useful to guide us all...
